Maintenance of PVC windows in 5 steps

Maintenance of PVC windows in 5 steps

Properly treated fittings, frames and seals will repay failure-free operation and a perfect appearance. How to maintain PVC window frames? How to renew seals in PVC windows?

We advise you what five steps should be taken systematically to obtain a longer life of the windows.

Most people remember to clean their windows regularly. However, he spends much less time maintaining the window joinery. The lack of systematic, at least once a year, cleaning, adjustment and lubrication of hinges, movable elements of fittings and seals may contribute to faster dysregulation of windows. As a result, the window sash begins to sag, loses its tightness or requires the use of force when closing. What to do to avoid these unpleasant consequences of failure?

STEP 1. CLEANING THE WINDOW PROFILES

Before starting typical conservation work, it is extremely important to clean the windows thoroughly. This activity should be given a lot of attention, especially when the windows have just been installed or the building is undergoing renovation. Failure to remove them can cause problems when closing and opening windows, as well as blocking and premature wear of the fittings.

Before you start washing glass or window profiles, you should remove any rubbish accumulated in the upper part of the opening sash frame and in the lower part of the frame. You can simply use a soft dust brush or a vacuum cleaner (e.g. construction) with a soft brush tip. The washing of PVC profiles is best done with mild agents without abrasives, aggressive chemicals or solvents.

STEP 2. OVERVIEW AND ADJUSTMENT OF MECHANISMS

When the windows are cleaned, you can inspect and adjust the metal parts of the windows, such as hinges and moving parts of fittings. The easiest way to find out if adjustment is necessary is to open and close the window sashes several times.

It is best to use the manufacturer's instructions, which detail information on the optimal method of adjustment.

STEP 3. HARDWARE LUBRICATION

When the fittings are properly adjusted, start lubricating the moving parts, i.e. the hinges and locking points. Such action will protect them against excessive deposition of dust and dirt and will allow for easier and smoother work.

STEP 4. GASKET CARE

Window seals, although we often forget about it, should be systematically not only cleaned, but also maintained. Otherwise, over the years, they may, under the influence of temperature and sunlight, crumble, start to crumble and lose their original elasticity. As a result, the windows will leak. So how to take care of this element of PVC windows? Twice a year, preferably in spring and autumn (to avoid extremely low and high air temperatures), they should be lubricated.

STEP 5. PRESSURE TEST

When the windows are cleaned and lubricated, you can proceed to the last step of the PVC joinery maintenance. We recommend that you carry out the so-called a test of pressure of the sash to the frame, which will determine whether the adjustment needs to be corrected. How to do it? It is enough to open the window sash and put a sheet of paper between its frame and the frame of the entire window. After closing the sash, try to pull it out. When this is successful, it is necessary to correct the regulation.
